Imagine you’re a prince/princess and I just show up intending to take your throne from you. What would you do? Would you walk away or would you stay and fight for your throne?
If you haven’t come across James 4:7, lemme put it here for you real quick:
So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you. (Amplified Version)
Oh, how I love this verse!!!!
RESIST the devil! Listen, James did not say “run away”; he did not say “avoid”. He said “RESIST”, meaning, stand your ground!
See, you get a new house — the house of your dreams — with your life savings and then strange spirits begin to torment the house. You do realise that if you leave the house, you’ve given up; you’ve run away; you’ve lost the battle; you’ve surrendered; you’ve declared the other side the conqueror; YOU HAVE BEEN UNSEATED FROM YOUR THRONE!
Whenever we face trials or challenges or temptations, the goal of enemy is to get us to shift position, to give up whatever is waiting for us on the other side because he recognises the value of that thing — and we probably don’t. The devil only attacks that which is spiritually valuable.
If you face temptations, it’s because there’s somewhere you’re going, something you’re about to unlock, someone you’re about to become. Whatever it is, the devil is trying to sabotage it — or better still, get you to “do” it so you can crucify yourself over it.
So this is why we’re told to call on God and RESIST the devil; to stand firm, and activate our capacity as children of God who are even more powerful than angels. Guess what? The devil will flee!! He will leave you alone! It’s not his throne to sit on; it’s yours. Fight for your throne. Fight for your birthright (which you got at your rebirth as a child of God).
Sure, the devil has gimmicks. He even knows your weak spots. He’ll use them against you. But a single moment of weakness, distraction or second-guessing at the war front can cost you that valuable thing that is the bone of contention.
Temptations are battles; only one person can come out victorious. Who’s it gonna be: you or the devil?
